Read the guide →When to call a licensed plumber
Minnesota law requires a state plumbing contractor license for anyone who offers plumbing work. The same law lets you do plumbing work on a home you own and live in, unless a local ordinance forbids it. The work still has to meet the Minnesota Plumbing Code, and many cities require a permit and inspection.
Call a licensed plumber for gas lines, water heater venting, sewer and drain lines, and any leak you can’t stop. If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
Find your main water shutoff now
A burst pipe can flood a basement in minutes. Find your main shutoff before you need it. In most homes it is near the water meter, often in the basement where the line comes through the wall. Saint Paul Regional Water Services advises making sure the valves on either side of the meter work and can be turned off if a pipe bursts.
Turn the valve slowly to be sure it moves, then open it fully again. If it is stuck or leaks, have it repaired. Never try to repair the meter yourself; call your water utility.
